President's List Announced for Spring 2018

The Mississippi College Office of Academic Affairs releases the president's list after the close of fall and spring semesters each academic year. To be eligible for the President's List, a student must maintain a 4.0 grade point average, based on a 4.0 system. The student must take a full course load of at least 12 semester hours of undergraduate credit with all academic courses impacting their grade point average.

Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) has announced that the following the Dean's List for the Spring semester of 2018. Four hundred and forty students were honored for high achievements in the classroom. To be placed on the Dean's List, the student must be a full-time undergraduate and have a 3.5 grade point average for the semester.

Elliot Curtis, six-foot sophomore from Waterloo, Ontario was named Division I NJCAA Player of the Week. Curtis is an infielder for the Columbia State Chargers and carries a 4.0 GPA.

Support Staff Council Provides Scholarship Opportunity

The Columbia State Community College Support Staff Council's "Chili/Soup Luncheon" fall fundraiser raised enough funds to award three student scholarships. Sixty-four students submitted scholarship essays as part of the application process which were judged by the Support Staff Council members. Other scholarship requirements required included that students were currently enrolled and attending Columbia State, have a 2.0 GPA or higher and an up-to-date and completed FAFSA. "It was an honor to lead the committee this year and be part of this project," said Kellie Gwin, Columbia State Enrollment Services processing clerk and support staff council chair. "The council had a tough time selecting the winners from this year's application pool." Scholarship winners, Sarah Houston (Franklin); Tamar Day (Spring Hill); and Christopher "Chase" Beard (Lawrenceburg) were appreciative of the $400 scholarship and all said that the funds will help pay for textbooks and other course fees.

Columbia State Students Inducted Into Sigma Kappa Delta Honor Society

Columbia State students were inducted into Sigma Kappa Delta, the national English honor society for two-year colleges. The honor society promotes honors excellence in English, and members enjoy writing, reading, discussion and fellowship. Membership is open to students who have completed one college English course and who maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher in English and other scholarship.

Columbia State Students Spend Summer Abroad

Thirty-eight Columbia State students spent the summer with the world as their classroom, participating in a study abroad program provided by the Tennessee Consortium for International Studies. Participants learned from Columbia State professors, as well as other Tennessee Board of Regents institutions. Students also earned college credit-all the while soaking in the culture and camaraderie of a foreign land. This summer, students traveled to multiple international destinations, including Galapagos Islands, England, India, South Africa and Greece.

Keldrick Lesure, TCCAA Male Student Athlete of the Week

Keldrick "KJ" Lesure was recently named "TCCAA Male Student Athlete of the Week" for the week of Sept. 1. A starter for Columbia State during his freshman year, Lesure averaged 11 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game. As a freshman, he maintained academic excellence, placing him on the dean's list for the fall semester and the president's list for the spring semester. He also recieved accolades from the TCCAA and is on pace to graduate from Columbia this spring.
