Columbia State Community College recently recognized participants in the TRiO program at the sixth annual TRiO Student Awards Celebration. The TRiO program graduated 26 students for the 2016-2017 academic year. Seven students graduated fall 2016, and 19 students graduated Saturday, May 6.

Columbia State Announces Spring 2017 Commencement Ceremonies And Speakers
For the first time in the college's 51-year history, Columbia State Community College celebrated its spring 2017 commencement with two ceremonies on May 6 in the Webster Athletic Center. The first ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and will feature student speaker, Caitlyn McNabb, and the second will begin at 2 p.m. and will feature student speaker, Destiny Seaton.

COLUMBIA STATE NAMES 2017 ALL-TENNESSEE ACADEMIC TEAM STUDENTS
Columbia State Community College recently named two freshman students, Destiny Seaton and Katherine Brisendine, to the 2017 All-Tennessee Academic Team. Seaton and Brisendine are two of 26 community college students selected statewide for the 2017 All-Tennessee Academic Team. Those selected are pursuing a variety of degrees and careers - most plan on continuing their education at a four-year university.

Columbia State Students Awarded AT&T Scholarship
AT&T presented a $5,000 contribution to Columbia State to support non-traditional, underserved students preparing for jobs requiring technology-based skills in Tennessee community colleges. The donation funds scholarships to help students begin a path toward completing their college degrees and is part of AT&T's $65,000 gift to the Tennessee Board of Regents.

Columbia State Student Named As Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Semifinalist
Columbia State Community College student, Caitlyn McNabb, was announced as a semifinalist for the Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, which provides up to $40,000 per year for each scholarship awarded. Nearly 3,000 community college students applied for the scholarship, and McNabb is one of 597 semifinalists selected. The JKC Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship is the largest in the country that is aimed at community college students seeking to transfer to four-year institutions.

Columbia State Student Accepted Into Harvard Undergraduate Research Program
Columbia State Community College freshman, States Labrum, has been accepted into the Harvard University Research Experiences for Undergraduates program in ecology for the upcoming summer. This summer research undergraduate program invited applications from two-year and four-year undergraduate institutions across the U.S. The selection process for the program, which involved an in-depth interview of the candidates by the Harvard Faculty, was highly competitive.

The New Century Scholars program is sponsored by The Coca-Cola Foundation, Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa and the American Association of Community Colleges. The program shares a common application with the All-USA Community College Academic Team program, which recognizes outstanding community college students.

Columbia State Community College student Matthew Gunther was one of approximately 40 students chosen to participate in the National Community College Aerospace Scholars program from Oct. 26-28 at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

Columbia State has chosen Heather Todd as the 2016-2017 SGA secretary/treasurer. She will have a fabulous perspective to contribute, considering she has been attending the Williamson campus for some time and will be primarily in Columbia in the fall. Todd has held a number of leadership positions in the past, and we are extremely pleased to have her as part of the SGA executive board.

Columbia State has selected Lexi Donnelly to serve as the 2016-2017 SGA vice president. She served as an SGA senator in spring 2016 and served as a student representative at the Campus-Capitol Connection in Nashville, TN in March. After this experience, she said she knew that she wanted to pursue leadership within Columbia State's SGA. Along with Kirkland Pinkerton, Lexi is also part of the President's Leadership Society. She is a driven individual with great ideas for the future of SGA.

Columbia State has selected Kirkland Pinkerton as its 2016-2017 SGA president. He served as an SGA senator during the 2015-2016 academic year. He is also involved in his community and has his own photography business. The Centerville native earned his EMT certificate this past spring and has returned to Columbia State this fall to major in nursning. Pinkerton has a great vision for SGA and is excited to serve our student body as president.
